Sarah and the Dragons

A November 2002 letter to team families
from Sue Graves
Manager of the Dragons soccer team

Have you ever seen those posters that say "All I really need to know I learned in kindergarten"? This year in my "Thanksgiving Memo" I'm doing my own version.  I promised you something special this year for my Annual Dragon Thanksgiving Memo -   I think I've hit it.

All I Really Need to Know I Learned From
Sarah McPharlin and Her Family

All I really need to know about how to live and what to do and how to be I learned from Sarah McPharlin and her family. This wisdom was not found in any classroom, but by watching Sarah and her family return to "real life" this year. These are the things I learned. If you really want to, you can get through anything.  Life is not always what you expect.  There is power in prayer.  There is strength in hope.  There is more generosity in this world than we thought.  If one looks hard enough, one can always find a bright side.  Little sisters are amazing little creatures that show us that life is still full of wonder.  Big sisters are also amazing creatures that show us the power of that bond.  Parents are people too.  Even though they may appear unbelievably strong on the outside, they still need love, a shoulder, a hug.  Give all three regularly - it feels good. Being part of a team is more important than being a star of a team.  A two-goal differential can make the crowd go wild.  We live in a great community.  Strength is getting up and going to school everyday after missing a whole year. Strength is pushing yourself to be your best and can come from a place you didn't even know you had.  Life is precious. Knowing your friends love you just because you're you.  Real love is unconditional. Love can make a difference. Humor can help lighten a load. A smile can light up a room.  Being a Dragon is like being a family.

As we approach this holiday season, it's important to reflect on the the important things in life - to be thankful for the now - to be hopeful for what's to come.  Enjoy this holiday weekend and give your Dragon an extra hug because they're truly special.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody!
